Will (not his real name) wasn’t sure how he would get back into exercising. He’d always been active–until he suffered an ACL injury that required surgery. While physical therapy helped him rehabilitate and restore his day-to-day movements, a high-powered workout program seemed out of reach. Fortunately, post-surgery personal training helped him get active once again.

After his surgery, physical therapy was a lifesaver for Will. The [site-name] physical therapists helped him manage his pain, improve his mobility, and reduce the formation of scar tissue so he wouldn’t have lasting issues. He relearned how to walk and worked on improving his balance and stability.

But Will was concerned about returning to the physically active lifestyle he’d had before his injury. As his physical therapy ended, he expressed his concerns to his therapist, who suggested he work with one of our in-house personal trainers.

Will hadn’t realized that post-surgery personal training was even an option. But after several months, he’s back to playing pick-up basketball games and going for long runs.

How’d he do it? Keep reading to find out!

What Happened During Will’s Post-Surgery Personal Training?

A personal trainer is a fitness professional who helps you set general health and fitness goals and guides you through a personalized exercise program. They are not the same as a physical therapist–but at [site-name], these two professions work together to ensure you stay active once physical therapy ends.

In Will’s case, his physical therapist cleared him to return to activity, but he wanted more guidance before he dove in. He no longer needed help with rehabilitation, but he did need help in developing an exercise program suitable to his current needs. He knew he couldn’t immediately dive back into what he was doing before. So what should he do?

That’s where our in-house personal trainer came in. He worked with Will and Will’s physical therapist to develop a progressive workout program to help Will gradually build up to the level he’d been before his injury. But more than that, Will’s trainer provided encouragement and accountability, so Will would stick with his workouts, just as he had with his physical therapy.

Will met with his personal trainer three times a week, during which he worked through a whole-body strength training program. His trainer also provided him with a running program for Will to do on his own. It alternated running and walking to ensure Will didn’t push too hard and suffer another injury.

By checking in regularly with his personal trainer, Will could return to his previous activity levels sooner than he might have otherwise. The personalized guidance was exactly the tool Will needed to succeed.
